Maj Sjöwall & Per Wahlöö Locked Room Titles
Maj Sjöwall (born September 25, 1935 in Stockholm) is a Swedish author and translator. She is best known for the collaborative work with her partner, in life and crime, Per Wahlöö on a series of ten police procedural novels featuring the exploits of Martin Beck, a police detective in Stockholm – all subtitled ‘The Story of a Crime’. These gritty novels actually began their own sub-genre ‘Nordic noir’ and often emphasis the corruption of the Swedish legal system. In 1971, the fourth of these books, ‘The Laughing Policeman’ (a translation of Den skrattande polisen, originally published in 1968) won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Novel and was adapted into the film The Laughing Policeman starring Walter Matthau.

Though this series includes 10 great mystery novels, all worth reading, there is only one locked room plot – and that is a real shame, as it is one of the better modern locked room novels!

Note: Only one locked room title – but it is a real treat!
The Locked Room has two plots running simultaneously. Larsson and Kollberg are reluctantly part of a special task force that needs to solve a spree of bank robberies. Detective Inspector Martin Beck is given a ‘pity case’ after recovering from being shot at the conclusion of ‘The Abominable Man’,which leaves him to solve a classic locked room mystery. The corpse was found shot through the heart in a room locked from within, with no firearm in sight. Although the two incidents appear unrelated, Beck believes otherwise, and solving the mystery acquires the utmost importance.
